How to Make it Count

Somehow everything has moved very quickly, and we are now on a countdown to 2026. But before we get there, it is Advent Season! This is usually the period from 1st December through to 24th December. For Christians – it is a special moment – like the lent season. It is a time when we prepare for the birth of Jesus Christ on Christmas day. Traditionally, the advent season is a festive season – a time of sharing in merry but giving to others as well.

I took a moment to reflect on how to make this year’s advent season count. Last year it was rather easier because I got the opportunity to be continuously reminded of random Acts of Kindness through the lens of children. We engaged in many small gestures of kindness and giving – without feeling any pressure to go beyond our means. I was therefore glad to come across an almost similar message of encouragement at a work environment. It felt quite easy to decide what I needed to do to exercise small random Acts of kindness. But is there more to be done in this period?

Beyond our actions to make the season delightful and pleasant for those around us, we are reminded of the need to make it count for our physical and mental wellbeing. And this is truly special. Over and above stepping out and putting a smile in the face of others, it is time to also do something special for you. Indulging in small habits of self-grounding are important. For example, a nature lover could take time to experience the beauty of our natural sceneries – the flora and fauna. A sports lover can take this time to pursue sporting activities or engage with like-minded fellows to cheer favourite sports team together. A music lover could use this time to play instruments to his/her favourite holiday lyrics. Creating time for loved ones and appreciating their presence everyday crowns it all.  The trick is to have a specific goal or target of what you want to do for others and yourself each day up until Christmas. It is no wonder that Advent Calendars exist – to give us ideas of what we could do each day.

Until the next post, happy advent season! Remember to be grateful and positive each day and extend that energy to those around you.
